  •  Really? (0+ / 0-)

There are ten MILLION people in Haiti. I live on an Island. It's pretty big. There are 185,000 people here.

If you hate government, don't run for office in that government.

    •  yes. really. (8+ / 0-)

But birth control costs money. Many types require a nurse to administer. Both of those things are hard to come by. I dare say the vast majority of Haitians use less resources in a year than you do in a week, so it is hardly fair to compare your island with Haiti.

      •  What's the Situation With Old Age Security? (3+ / 0-)

In many poor places, it's essential to have enough kids so that the burdens of carrying you in old age aren't too severe on any one or two.

(and likely other places with low resources) children are your wealth. A burden and a foothold. There is nothing for old age security. If you are blessed, your family may care for you, but that care is very limited. If you have no family...life is hard there. I have a friend whose father died a year ago in a rural village - he had a stroke the year before. His last year was spent in his bed in a very basic home. They had no ability to toilet him, feeding was difficult, he could not talk.
Anywhere in the world where women have access to birth control, they will use it in fair numbers. They understand the advantages to spacing children and controlling the number of offspring. The problem is gaining access. Most Haitians still live in remote (to medical care) areas. Even in Port au Prince - which is a sprawling city - medical clinics are sparse and then they charge usually for services.

And also I would add that the earthquake set everything back so far, including health care.

Obviously you must be an expert on Haiti. Likewise, I can drive a car, so clearly I must be an expert on Formula 1.

This island Earth. One thing I have learned about living on an island is that they can sustain only a certain population. Haiti has TEN MILLION PEOPLE.

        •  Yes, Haiti has problems (0+ / 0-)

Which you seem determined to pin on some kind of defect in the Haitian people.

Read a little Haitian history. And, you know, support one of the many, many NGOs that are working hard down there to make a difference and improve people's health. No country has ever, ever, ever solved its population problems through someone else adopting a superior and condescending attitude toward them. However, with better access to health care, more economic development and equitable distribution of resources, and promotion of women's rights and access to contraception, the birth rate in Haiti would start to fall.
