    some insiders were saying it was because of obama's work on nuclear disarmament- an issue on which obama has focused since he was a young man, and some hinted that it was partially a sort of encouragement. there were some obvious alternatives, including hu jia, wei jingsheng, morgan tsvangirai, and sima samar.

    •  No, it was for turning the US away from unilateral (8+ / 0-)

      ism.  Specifically, for running on a platform of multilateralism and convincing the American public to go along with it, such that the largest superpower went away from unilateralism to multilateralism.

      Sadly, Nobel Committee removed the videos regarding all of the prizes for that year (Peace, Literature, Chemistry, etc) from their YouTube channel.  But they had interviews with the heads of the various prize subcommittees where they spelled out the reasons each recipient was given the prize for the field in question.  Also, they gave an overview of the reasons at the announcement.

      Rachel Maddow talked about at the time, and did a good job, but she put in more issues besides the multilateralism issue, but that was the main issue the Nobel Committee awarded Obama the prize for:

        •  I wonder why Dick Lugar wasn't (0+ / 0-)

          a part of it, if that were the case (I'm not saying it's not, it always made sense to me that it would be the case).  This was one of Lugar's causes before Obama joined the Senate.  After all, the Nun-Lugar Act was remarked upon by President Obama in 2012 on its 20th anniversary.  Once in the Senate Obama and Lugar further tightened the legislation together in 2006.
