    Darwin traveled all around the world, as a quick wiki read would show. He wrote about it in "The Voyage of the Beagle" (which I got for free from Amazon).

    Darwin went ashore in just about every place he could, collected plants, animals and fossils, and I'm pretty sure already had some ideas before he ever got to the Galapagos.

    Damn shame about the spill. There are resident people and many tourists there, and they use diesel.

      during the voyage of the Beagle and probably spent far more time on the mainland of South America than anywhere else.  The Beagle's mission was to thoroughly chart the South American coastline.

      However the unique species on the Galapagos and, in particular, the fact that different islands had different species of mockingbirds was supposedly crucial in developing Darwin's thinking.  The more famous Darwin's finches were a later interest than the lesser known mockingbirds.

      So I don't see anything wrong particularly with Fox's statement in this case.
