  •  The money contributed by hunters to conservation, (7+ / 0-)

while not insignificant, is only a small percentage of overall conservation spending. $81 million from duck stamps? A single private conservation organization, the Nature Conservancy, spent over $200 million alone, from private donations from caring citizens, not a fee that HAS to be paid if you want to hunt. That is just one of many such organizations. And unlike duck stamps, no native wildlife was killed as a result.

Hunters DO, however, contribute to wildlife conservation and ecosystem restoration in a way you overlook here. Every time a hunter shoots a non-native animal, they are helping with habitat restoration. Feral hogs, in particular, are astoundingly destructive. Although I call my pogroms "eradication" rather than "hunting".

Killing native species is more problematic. It is true that killing many species of deer is an ecosystem service, although focusing on the prime breeders is not. But it can be argued that the only reason this is helpful is because hunters have wiped out all the predators, so they are responsible for the imbalance in the first place. And it is an inarguable fact that the populations of all species were far healthier before hunting began.

      it's almost all the money.

Money for advertising isn't money for conservation.

Just what the fuck do you think predators and hunters do? Jesus fucking Christ in a handbasket.

      I mean why comment?

was spent on purchasing land for conservation.

killing prime breeders of deer is too conservation. Does are the only way to control populations, bucks post rut have no effect on populations. Hunters didn't wipe out all the predators, settlers and govt employees did. Sport hunters pay for and restore predator populations from birds to mammals and everything else..

There is no "balance",  "nature is in a constant state of flux only reaching temporary states of equilibrium".

Not sure what species were healthier before modern sport hunting, they were almost wiped out.

          I get exasperated.
