for the u.s. and elsewhere, an end to all forms of subsidies to fossil fuels industries, including making them bear the costs of all the environmental damage they cause, and carbon taxes.

as I admit, this was originally intended as a comment to draw attention to the fact that the investment community gets what the Republican Party refuses to admit.

At the least, instead of investigating Benghazi, Congress should be investigating the most at risk areas of America. New Orleans and Miami Beach are going to be the first to go. Even if it is 200 years from now, we need to start planning now. Do we invest in saving them now, or just write them off? Flooding in the upper Mississippi valley and droughts in the South West seem likely. What do we do? We have to at least think about this.

This is in some ways a hopeful diary. In spite of the Republican denial, the investment community (which includes pension fund managers) as a whole are aware of the problem, and are looking for solutions.

I work in the same building as the Pacific Fishery Management Council. I will try to trap one of the biologist and find out if there are plans for a salinated Columbia river.

      I don't know. What should I do?

But I don't support measures that would impose a regressive energy tax on working and middle-class households.

        •  That is why I wish Republican would talk (0+ / 0-)

Newt Gingrich once wrote a diary on Redstate in 2007 that was surprising not insane.

          TThe Case for Green Conservatism

The Left Wing Machine. The first group is those on the left who believe that only big government, big litigation, high taxes, and big regulation are appropriate answers for our environmental challenges.
          The “Stand Pat” Republicans.

The second group is those on the right who have grown so weary of the left using the environment as an emotional tool to push higher taxes and bigger government that they reflexively ignore or deny environmental challenges.

American Solutions. The third group – the group that I believe is the future of the American conservative movement, and indeed the future of American politics – are those who favor a “green conservatism” - an optimistic, positive, science and technology based, entrepreneurial, market-oriented, incentive-led, conservative environmentalism that creates more solutions faster and that will result in more biodiversity with less pollution and a safer planet.

What happen to the third group?

I want a sane voice from the Right!

a “green conservatism” - an optimistic, positive, science and technology based, entrepreneurial, market-oriented, incentive-led, conservative environmentalism that creates more solutions faster
Why the conservatives have abandoned the dialog is a frustrating mystery.

        •  Tax system needs to be looked at in total, not (0+ / 0-)

just individual taxes.  Carbon taxes, cap and trade and efficiency standards can be offset with tax credits to keep taxes on average progressive.

Discouraging the use of fossil fuels through higher costs for using fossil fuels will be essential to reducing Green House Gasses.

Getting the top 1% to reduce fossil fuel use does not get the job done, 100% of the population needs to be incented to reduce their direct and indirect use of fossil fuels.

The most important way to protect the environment is not to have more than one child.

can be done. A WW2 level of spending could probably be absorbed by the issue when all aspects, mitigations and preventions are considered.

About 2/3 of what we spend on MIC could be moved over considering that so much of it is oriented toward a type of enemy we haven't had for a generation. Of course the present contactors don't have the skill set needed for climate change but considering that we don't have the political ability to take them off the public teat, fine, let them fumble around learning how to deal with it and hiring subcontractors who do have the skill sets.

The science is telling us we don't have the luxury of the glacial pace we took getting to the Moon from 1961. Time's a-wasting and there are a zillion things we can do while we're waiting for China to grow into a worthy Cold War enemy.
