    •  Not fat shaming. (12+ / 0-)

      health shaming.

Nobody half my age should be in that condition.

And no amount of fingerwagging or HR's will change my perspective.

      Legal means "good".

      •  But you don't actually care about him or his (8+ / 0-)

health.  You can't; you don't know him.  What you're saying, in effect, that he should not appear in public until he is a smaller size.  That is fat shaming.

Look, I know he's a risible figure in this picture, because of his gun and his tough-guy posing, and the urge to make fun on all fronts is strong.

But the thing is, there are probably Kossacks reading this who, minus the gun and the hat, look pretty much exactly like this guy.  Would you be "health shaming" him if he were protesting against fracking or for a higher fast-food wage?

I am not arguing with you that his weight is healthy.  I am arguing that judging strangers on their weight is also unhealthy, because it tells large people to hide until they are thin enough, good enough, to participate in public life.  That's extremely emotionally destructive, and it robs us of as many smart, compassionate, insightful people as it does jerks.

      •  To build on what cai said... (9+ / 0-)

Assuming you saw this person in person (sans gun, natch) holding a 'I was against the last war too!' sign at an anti-war rally, would you walk up to him and tell him that he looks like a balloon?

It's easy for those of us who are metabolically advantaged to be smug. It's what you're doing. And you should stop.

For more information, you should read this. There have been dozens of studies on this. It's more or less settled science.

If I set out to eat an extra two thousand calories a day, I could almost certainly gain 50 pounds or so. But as soon as I stopped intentionally doing that, I would lose it. If that person restricted his diet to 600 calories a day he could almost certainly lose weight, but absent an amount of will power that the studies all say is vanishingly rare in the human species, he would be extremely likely to just gain it all back as soon as such a regimen was no longer enforced.

I encourage you to read the article I linked to, maybe look at the details of the Oregon prison experiment, and then just stop with the personal comments about other peoples' appearances. It's not just rude, it's also a huge distraction from anything even vaguely useful.
