  •  Let's hope this high-profile case-- (8+ / 0-)

especially if it's successful with this small handful of troops--helps make headway in human rights efforts of all kinds around the world and in the effort to educate women so they can take their rightful places in societies around the globe.

Good news on this front should send a strong message to oppressors abroad and here at home.

    •  First time that a Gov tried to help women or girls (9+ / 0-)

      somewhere in the world.
NGOS, yes, but actual governments sending troops to save women and not oil or other property? This is all very hopeful for me.

      •  First time publicly. (0+ / 0-)

Governments and militaries do lots and lots of covert things, good and nasty nasty.
I seriously doubt this is a first for a small scale but highly motivated military action for the benefit of a group of innocents.

        •  I will look but I am sure it is the first time (0+ / 0-)

`anyone cared about girls or women not connected to another war or property issue

          •  What I'm suggesting is that not all actions (0+ / 0-)

by governments and militaries are something you can just go look at.

There have been efforts on the behalf of refugees - largely women and children - that have been undertaken and also on the behalf of transitioning orphans. The documentation won't be terribly available because no one really much cares.

            •  But not the same. The Nigeria action is new (0+ / 0-)

              and VERY GOOD NEWS.

There is no reason other than human rights for women that the world is doing something about abuse of women, just women, not refugees who include women, directly and not connected to a war or other issue, just because you can't do this to girls anymore, at least this is a start.

i don't understand the contrary posts when this is just the best news for women, for a government to send the Marines to rescue girls when there is no other issue involved, is a fabulous new development

              embrace it, don't diminish it!

              •  I'm fully embracing it. I'm thrilled. (0+ / 0-)

Saying that it has never ever ever happened before is just rather silly. Governments and militaries have deployed for women and children before. That is all. That doesn't in any way diminish this action.

                •  No, they have not. not just for girls and no men (0+ / 0-)

                  and no other reason

but if you insist on misunderstanding how this is new, i wish I had better words

                  •  I didn't say it wasn't different. I just said that (0+ / 0-)

it was public, but that didn't make it a first. It's just public this time.

You're stubborn assumption that is some kind of absolute first is a bit absurd, actually.  It's just very public. Not all ops are.

      •  Actually overthrowing the Taliban should count (0+ / 0-)

as would US support for action against Hamas and Hezbollah by Israel.

        •  Not really as nothing changed and it WAS NOT (0+ / 0-)

about the women, they just used that excuse

this Nigeria action is really the FIRST time a gov cared about girls just because they are human beings

          •  Whatever the reason (0+ / 0-)

they are on the right side.

Except that Israel hasn't anywhere near enough here. Israel has let Hamas stay in power. It should not have withdrawn from Gaza in 2009; it should have re-conquered the entire area and put Hamas out of business there for good.

            •  Nigeria is the first time a GOV has sent marines (1+ / 0-)

or cared at all about girls just because they are being abused, where it is not part of larger IP conflict, for example.

this development is such good news for women in the world I don't understand those who want to diminish it
