    on This Land Is Your Land has a nice discussion of this and another (equally subversive) verse about soup kitchens, as well as the repeated line "God blessed America for me," all of which Woody appears to have dropped from the lyrics by 1945 (though, hey, it's a folksong, so lyrics are always in flux). All in all, I think Woody made the right call. The 1945 version is a wondrous, inclusive, how-could-anyone-possibly-disagree-with-this anthem, which is sometimes precisely what the world needs. I think he got that.
