  •  Thank you. (5+ / 0-)

I get so sick of the military worship in this country.  I know of no other term to use for it.

That is, the constant awed, insipid talk about "our heroes" and "thanking them for their service to our country," and so on.  (I come from a military family, by the way, and have nothing against people who are serving in the military.)

As you say about teachers ... What about other people who serve the welfare of our country, putting in long hours, often for lousy pay:  teachers ... and counselors at non-profit agencies (my own background) ... people who volunteer in literacy programs ... volunteers in any number of area ...?

How are they NOT "serving our country," just as much as people in the military?

    •  I was once thanked for my teaching service (12+ / 0-)

It was on a plane flight, and the guy next to me was going to a place near Pittsburgh for additional training in his military specialty.  He had been in Iraq and Afghanistan and was getting the training before going back for another tour of duty.  he was probably around age 40 and had a family that he didn't like being away from.

He had done some coaching of school teams when he was younger, and that gave us something in common to talk about and led to discussions about teaching.  I was greatly surprised when he thanked me for my service when we parted.
