  •  How (4.00)
the state of Pa. elected Santorum? Rigged elections. That's how you get a bunch of criminals in office. That's why their outrageous statements continue to surprise and anger us. We are not conditioned to this particular kind of criminality.

PA was a regular northern state.  Hell, Santorum would have a hard time getting elected from Ohio or even Indiana.  I can understand Spector, with the old Liberal Republican strain dragging in folks.  In a lot of ways, I can support politicians like him, and was a big fan of Lowell Weicker from Connecticut.

When your from another state, and see Santorum go on, it makes you think what Carville said about PA being Philly and Pittsburg with Alabama in the middle.

We've got his cousin, Sen Allen, down here in Virginia.  But Allen is a politician and watches his wacko comments in public.  I doubt if we'll run him off in 06' since Warner has turned chicken and won't run against him.  For the sake of PA, I really hope you folks can knock him out of the box next year.  Then we can see him run against Allen for the GOP nod in 2008.

What's real bad is that I work with a guy who looks exactly like Santorum, is a big fan of his and has his picture framed on his desk.  I've been thinking about changing that picture when he's on vacation and replace it with one of Larry David or Howard Dean.

      •  Larry David for sure. (none)
But who in the hell has a framed picture of a Senator on their desk???????????????????

With the GOP in power, you see that sort of stuff a lot.  But Santorum, I think it has something to do with religion, as this guy is a really religious Catholic who has ground down teeth from practicing catholic birth control

I live in Central PA and there are several red counties, true. But while volunteering for many campaigns over the years, there are pockets of wingnuts but the majority we encounter consider themselves Moderate. In Central PA, Moderates of both parties who like Specter more than Santorum abound in large numbers. I would say this region is moderate and far from Wingnut. Do we have some pockets of wingnuttery, naturally, .and yes. But it is not as bad as some regions.

Many of us believe Santorum got in because of his party. Senator Jack Heinz was very moderate and today would probably be a Democrat and not a Republican according to Teresa and his sons.
He is still much beloved in PA.

I think he got in office portraying himself as a Jack Heinz clone and then after being elected, he showed his true colors. He is a true wingnut who does not reflect the majority opinion of most in PA. He can be beaten, I think, if his opponent is a moderate and well respected and has name recognition.  If I had to describe the state in which I have lived most of my life and volunteered in political and social causes for 25 years here, I would say moderate. Pennsylvanians raise an eyebrow and get skeptical if anyone sounds too radical about any issue.

The big mystery is AL Gore won PA but Santorum won a second term in the same election. It was bizarre and hard to sort out. Name recognition and swing voting in PA is quite common and there are a HUGE number of Split Ticket Voting.
Same this year, Specter and Kerry both won in PA. I talked to a large number of Kerry voters who were voting for Specter because both supported stem cell research!!! That is huge here with the second largest number of seniors in the country. They are concerned about healthcare costs, medicare, and medical research!!!
