    First try, three months.

One of the things, in fact, that finally got it through my thick skull just how bad off I really was.

That and the examining doctor finding a spot on my back that curled my hands into claws for three hours.

And finally getting my hands on my medical history and reading ten years of "has no one told this man about disability?"

But yeah, the biggest came-the-dawn moment was hearing all the horror stories about multi-year battles through the application process, then sailing through a process specifically designed to keep people who "aren't disabled enough" out.

after he was diagnosed with inoperable cancer, thanks to the people at the hospice that he got involved with after his diagnosis. The right kind of advocate can make a huge difference.

Oh, and those stories about benefits being paid for years after a person's death? My brother died at 11:45 pm on May 7th - on May 13th there was a letter from his bank addressed to the estate letting us know that the SSA had taken back his May payment. Amazing how that can be handled so quickly.
