    •  Who said we are continuing a war? (6+ / 0-)

Having US personnel and equipment in strategic locations around the globe is not in any way equivalent to war. I'm surprised that some here would think this means war.

      •  yeah (8+ / 0-)

afghanistan is not a hot zone. it's just a strategic location. i'm surprised that some here would think keeping troops in a war zone doesn't mean war.

        •  With Obama as the CIC and President, I am no (10+ / 0-)

no longer surprised about what some here post, well, sometimes I am, perhaps a bit, well, maybe more than a bit, but then I consider the posters I recognize that will not let any question of Obama being the greatest president go by without challenge- they must defend him on all counts, for anything and everything that others might criticize or even question.

i'm surprised that some here would think keeping troops in a war zone doesn't mean war.

you know the people we're talking about!

If you think that the US has a strategic interest in a stable Afghanistan. You might be some people.

If you think that the failed policies of the previous administration are going to take longer to fix than they took to create. You might be some people.

If you think that drawing down troop levels to 1/3rd their current level is actually significant progress. You might be some people.

If you think Barack Obama is a more capable President than George W. Bush. You might be some people.

            •  yes, you might be some people (8+ / 0-)
If you think Barack Obama is a more capable President than George W. Bush. You might be some people.
But that bar is so incredibly low that it is not even worth mentioning.

If you think Barack Obama is a more capable President than
(insert name of your choice of an actual capable president here) then a serious discussion might start on this subject.

so yeah, i would've probably felt the need to defend myself too for that statement.

now, your gripe would have more legs had the commenter left out that last dig and kept his comment about policy.

detrimental trade bills, the wall street boys doing what they want, no accountability for the past, possibly another incredibly detrimental pipeline, putting SS cuts on the table, flirting with grand bargains that are not very good for the lessers in this country in the long term, etc...

those things must sound like no big deal to you but they are to me. yeah, i have standards and i judge all presidents by them.

                •  it's about his policies, not him personally, and (0+ / 0-)

here's a paragraph that describes what i think of his policy decisions:

Obama has been part and parcel in a ton of bad decisions and policies over the past few years. sure, he's done a few token good things, but most of the time you can correlate them to the political winds and the lack of damage they do to the actual power holders in this country, and many of them were watered down or half measures in order to just accomplish something.
and 3 comments that describe my feelings in a nutshell.

                  one

                  two

                  three

i think by and large most of his policy decisions have not been good ones. every time it get hope and i think ok, he has a chance to do some good, he doesn't end up doing it or does something tepid that doesn't piss the elites off.

so no, i don't have much good to say about his policy decisions. i think he seems like a very nice guy, and i wouldn't mind being friends with him and his wife, cuz policy positions don't figure into personal like or dislike. but policy-wise, not much for me to like.

    •  maybe it's complicated (0+ / 0-)

and sniping from the sidelines about "a failed and unwinnable war" isn't really a substantial argument.

      •  maybe (5+ / 0-)

some of us understand the complications, and it is in fact a failed and unwinnable war. here's a little research project: find out who was the last leader of a centralized afghan government who didn't have foreign troops keeping him in power. find out who was the last afghan leader who neither took nor left office by coup or assassination or going into exile.

and stop Bush from diverting resources from Afghanistan to Iraq.

          It's so simple!

All you have to do is leave Afghanistan as a tribal mess with no central government. I mean, it's not like anything bad could come out of that scenario. Or, you know, nothing bad for the United States.
