Their cause must be our cause too. Because it's not just Negroes, but really it's all of us, who must overcome the crippling legacy of bigotry and injustice. And we shall overcome. -- Lyndon B. Johnson

    •  Chernobyl says much more about the Soviet Union (7+ / 0-)

than it does about nuclear power.  The Chernobyl reactors used a design that was illegal in the US and many other countries (and which is not used now) that causes the reactors to become unstable under a variety of conditions.  The construction was terrible, as documented by a letter that then-KGB director Yuri Andropov, reported to the Central Committee in 1979.  The plant operators did some incredibly stupid things, turning off external power (required for emergency cooling) and placing the reactor in a mode that the operator's manual specifically warned against using.

When it blew up, the director of the plant looked at a stuck radiation meter and concluded that there was no problem.  When a fire broke out, they called the local fire department without warning them of any unusual problem.  They treated it like any other fire - and all the firemen died.  The army then sent in troops, without any protective gear, and they all died too.

We certainly hope that none of this stupidity would be repeated in the United States.  I believe that our reactors are generally safe, but the cost of keeping them safe over their lifetime, and the cost of disposing of waste safely might not be fully factored in to many nuclear projects.  For this reason. I would consider nuclear power to be a suitable backup energy source, to be used if we cannot get clean energy sources online fast enough.  However, we should not use its availability as a reason to delay the development of those sources.
