  •  Yeah, the windspeed in my yard isn't 12 mph (8+ / 0-)

    (5 m/s) very often...

    •  Yeah, in general residential wind has been a (6+ / 0-)

non-starter. Wind resource maps are for 30m, 50m, and 80m for utility-scale turbines.

This guy may have a more efficient design, but I am skeptical that changes the basic conclusion.

    •  12mph on _average_ (0+ / 0-)

So for every calm hour, you'd need a 24mph hour, and so on.

      •  Turbine energy production isn't linear (0+ / 0-)

Wind turbines have "power curves" - so a site with 0 mph wind half the time and 24 mph wind half the time would have pretty different production from a constant 12 mph.

Part of that is because the energy in wind scales with the wind speed cubed, part of it is because the turbine has a certain set speed that it will be most efficient at.

    •  As you go up, the wind increases. (3+ / 0-)

Even just a dozen feet up.  If pole towers will hold it or some other type of relatively inexpensive relatively attractive tower, then they could be quite useful.

The higher up you go, the more wind there is.

    •  That's right, I think this is too much hype (1+ / 0-)

Why promote something that requires 12 mph winds? That is a fairly strong, steady gust. Not typical for my area or most areas, especially urban and suburban.

Too much hype does not help these issues. I am all for wind, solar and other alternative energies. However, doing this on an individual home basis seems very inefficient. Obama's move to get utilities to do more alternative energy is the better strategy.
