    I can appreciate character development.  I can appreciate - especially in a fantasy epic, the desire to develop the landscape.

    I just did slog through book 5 - and it's become a slog/became a slog early in book 4.

    It's a great tale and I'm not regretting the hours I've spent or will spend finishing the series, but I do think this is one of those rare cases where the adaptation trumps the source.

    Part of that is the cast - Dinklage and Coster-Waldau in particular do a better job bringing Tyrion and Jamie to life than the books...

    But a big part of it is simply that the confines of a television series and the need to lop out material and characters is precisely the sort of careful editing the source needed.  

    I honestly don't think I've really missed any of the characters left out and the meandering sidetrips that never seem to get anywhere (and in reality, never do in the books) are welcome edits.
