  •  If we turned these terrorists loose why are we (0+ / 0-)

still trying to kill and capture more ?

    Ask Congress and BHO.

I'm betting what ever hoops the military would have made him jump through to get out would have been insignificant compared to what the Taliban did to him.

I don't think he was a coward, just a fool.

Give him a dishonorable discharge turn him loose and let him live in shame and ignominy.

We can't lay this one at the feet of congress like we do most policy failures. He didn't consult with them like he was required to (Adam B outlines this very well in other diaries on this topic).

The president owns this disgrace...and what's more, he has yoked the party with it. Even our own senators are saying Obama broke the law:

Two top lawmakers on the Senate Intelligence Committee said Tuesday that the Obama administration broke the law by not informing Congress before the prisoner exchange that resulted in Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl’s release.

Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein and Republican Sen. Saxby Chambliss said the administration violated the law by failing to address serious concerns they had about the deal to swap Bergdahl for five Taliban detainees. Chambliss said he had not had a conversation with the White House about a possible exchange for at least 18 months.

"It comes to us with some surprise and dismay that the transfers went ahead with no consultation, totally not following law," Feinstein told reporters following a closed door meeting. "And in an issue with this kind of concern to a committee that bears the oversight responsibility, I think you can see that we're very dismayed about it ."

This one has me sick to my stomach. It won't end well.

Adequate health care should be a LEGAL RIGHT in the U.S without begging or bankruptcy. Until it is, we should not dare call our society civilized.

Who voted for the Iraq war, and the Patriot Act? Hmm, why am I not surprised with the above quote...

..i.e. that Obama handed the enemy 5 murdering terrorists in exchange for, at minimum, a deserter.

          •  So by your logic (3+ / 0-)

we should never in our history have done prisoner exchanges with any foe at the end of any conflict. Because that is what happened here.

We have had plenty of time to try these people. More than plenty. Indefinite detention is something I will never support. We got one of our own back. It's time this stain on our history came to an end.

            •  Oh I hear you on the detention time... (0+ / 0-)

I just don't concur with the assessment that we should trade a deserter for murdering terrorists...that's all.

He, and another like-minded unit member, would periodically leave the base to talk to the locals.

Because he, unlike the trigger-happy thugs who are now being pushed in front of TV cameras by GOP strategists, actually cared about the people he was tasked to protect.

One night, with leave from his CO, he left base again -- and this time wasn't allowed to return.

The fact that he had left the base before and always returned up to that point means that desertion will be impossible to prove.

Also, the more that comes out about the general sleaziness of the people in his unit, it will become clear that he was probably one of the better people in it.

                •  Wow...so now we smear the soldiers in his unit... (0+ / 0-)

...in order to make him (and the president) look better?

                  un-fucking-believable...

    •  I can agree with your last line. (6+ / 0-)

And maybe his actions were foolish, but what's done is done. I am just having a really hard time watching the left scream this is the end times. I think the War on Terror was never anything more than an excuse for perpetual war profiteering.

So let the man go home. Let him live with what he did and what he went through. And bring the rest of them home too. This has all gone on way too long.

      •  As Hesiod said, the guy's smearers are liars (5+ / 0-)

For one thing, if he'd really planned to desert, why didn't he do so during the eleventy-five-billion times that he left the base in the past?

For another, if he'd really willingly gone over to the Taliban, why aren't the videos they made of him showing him happy and well-fed?

Think about it:  To have an American soldier willingly defect would have been the biggest propaganda coup imaginable for the Talib -- as well as for American right-wingers, who would have used the video as "proof" that Obama doesn't know how to fight wars properly.

Instead, he's half-starved and obviously miserable, and also, very obviously, a prisoner of war, not a comrade in arms.
