Holy shit...we're in worse shape than I thought.

Do you think the American public will buy your defense?

The Taliban, as wrong as they may be, did not carry out the 9/11 attacks. They were the controlling government  in Afghanistan. We went to war against their government.  They were enemies, to be sure. But the "terrorist" label is absurd.
    ...because I sure don't.

Adequate health care should be a LEGAL RIGHT in the U.S without begging or bankruptcy. Until it is, we should not dare call our society civilized.

which words are defending them? You're an asshole.

    •  So what the American public 'buys' (4+ / 0-)

is the important point here?  REALLY?  We all know just how dumbed down most of the electorate is, do you honestly think the 'American public' really has any idea what we subject these soldiers to?

I don't condone the desertion, at all.  I do think as the diarist says, maybe a moment of insanity was part of this.  And yes, Bergdahl left his unit and the others with him and definitely should not have done that.  But should Obama have just left him there then?  Fuck him, he deserted?  He's still an American.

One other little thing here too - I have read that some of these 'terrorists' turned themselves in and ended up in the Gitmo.  What say you there?  The "most dangerous killers"?  And you think that their captivity, continued with no end in sight, has NOT inspired more violence?  They don't need to be dead to be considered martyrs for the cause you know.

And Kane was in no way, shape or form 'defending the Taliban' as you so ineloquently put it, sans nuance of course, but merely stating that not all enemies are 'terrorists'.

As for the Murikan public, about a third or so of the lemmings from Faux will never see anything positive here.  So really, WTF?

So I guess we should just start parroting the right-wing talking points many of us here have spent countless hours pushing back against. The Taliban was A-OK with our government and corporate masters back in 1999. They only became the enemy when they refused to give up bin-Laden. Were they shit bags before that? Hell yes. But when the US wanted a pipeline deal their evil was 'not so bad' to get in the way.

It has driven me nuts how the word terrorist has been abused in this country. Everyone suddenly became one (it has been hurled at those of us on this site too). Most people in Afghanistan didn't even know about 9/11 until we showed up guns a-blazing. A lot of the people we have been fighting were 'radicalized' by our invasion. But they all get called terrorists.

Let's not confuse the issue here. The war is winding down, we did a prisoner swap. If the American public is still too damn stupid to understand what happened over the past 13 years then yes we have a problem. But let's not aid the Right in their spin.
