    would kill the economy in Los Angeles in particular and California in general. They said so in 1960 and 1970 and 1980 and probably every year since.

    Doesn't seem to have worked out that way.

      Cosmos had a really good segment on tetraethyl lead in gasoline and hence lead in the environment (air, land, water, human bodies…). The researcher who proved that it was poisoning us all, Claire Patterson, had previously used the decay of uranium to lead to establish the age of the Earth. The denialist industry and politicians stood in the way of banning leaded gasoline from the 1960s until 1986.
