  •  The Pope just told married couples they can't be (3+ / 0-)

    happy unless they go forth and procreate.  According to him, having just pets just won't do.

      •  Whether we grant that God (or the FSM) (8+ / 0-)

        actually spoke to the first humans on the rock and said something approximating what is in the KJV Bible at Genesis 1:28,

        And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.
        or whether we grant no such thing, the plain fact of the matter is that IT'S ALREADY BEEN DONE. Fait accompli. This wasn't one of the ten commandments supposedly inscribed on quick reference stone tablets for Moses and which are treated as eternal guides. No. Not at all. It was supposedly an order given to a very few people--the ones who were around at the time. Well, whether it was because they were really obedient or just because they liked sex, they managed to pull it off. For good or ill, the earth has been subdued. Mankind has "dominion" over the fish of the sea and the fowl of the air. Just ask the tuna, cod, dodos, and passenger pigeons.

        I don't believe it says anywhere that God commanded humans to multiply past the point they could sustain their own existence, probably because that would be self-evidently stupid and something no omniscient deity would order.

        Not that self-evidently stupid is remotely out of bounds for things many humans are willing to believe, if it suits their narrow prejudices.

          "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."

          "And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.

          Works well, eh?

          America, where a rising tide lifts all boats! Unless you don't have a boat...uh...then it lifts all who can swim! Er, uh...um...and if you can't swim? SHAME ON YOU!

        •  So What We Need Is (5+ / 0-)

          a new message from God---something like "enough multiplying, already!?"  I'm for it.  Now who do we know who hears from God AND is sane?  Dubya?  Pat Roberston?  Nobody?  Personally, I can't think of a single one.

            such as Micah: What does the Lord require of you but to seek justice, love kindness and walk humbly with God. (6:8)

            Or Amos: (7)
            4They trample on the heads of the poor
 as on the dust of the ground
 and deny justice to the oppressed.

            ...
            6 buying the poor with silver
 and the needy for a pair of sandals,
 selling even the sweepings with the wheat.
            7 The Lord has sworn by himself, the Pride of Jacob: “I will never forget anything they have done.

            Or Isaiah: (58)
            “If you do away with the yoke of oppression,
                with the pointing finger and malicious talk,
            10 and if you spend yourselves in behalf of the hungry
                and satisfy the needs of the oppressed,
            then your light will rise in the darkness,
                and your night will become like the noonday.
            11 The Lord will guide you always;
                he will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land
                and will strengthen your frame.
            You will be like a well-watered garden,
                like a spring whose waters never fail.
            12 Your people will rebuild the ancient ruins
                and will raise up the age-old foundations;
            you will be called Repairer of Broken Walls,
                Restorer of Streets with Dwellings.

            Or Hosea: (6)
            4 “What can I do with you, Ephraim?
                What can I do with you, Judah?
            Your love is like the morning mist,
                like the early dew that disappears.
            5 Therefore I cut you in pieces with my prophets,
                I killed you with the words of my mouth—
                then my judgments go forth like the sun.
            6 For I desire mercy, not sacrifice,
                and acknowledgment of God rather than burnt offerings.
            7 Like Adam, they have broken the covenant;
                they were unfaithful to me there.

            Eh, you get the idea. And that's just the Old Testament (Hebrew Bible, Tanakh, whatever term you're most comfortable with).

            maybe Sylvia Browne?  Her prediction is that we make the earth uninhabitable by humans by the end of this century.

          means to fill to its previous level, or to rated capacity. It does not mean "overflow"
