    •  Good point. Let's try it (0+ / 0-)

Bergdahl is bored and disillusioned with his mission, with the Army, and with his dysfunctional platoon and chain of command.   Everybody knows it, so he's not well-liked, and he's a bit of a loner, anyway.   He also fancies himself as some sort of philosophical potato-state-Rambo.  So, to alleviate his boredom, and out of a sense of adventure and/or escapism, he takes a knife and some water, and he slips outside the perimeter for short periods of time, just to see if he can.   Except this last time,  he doesn't "get away with it" - he gets caught by the Taliban.

Now, this dysfunctional platoon, who maybe knew or maybe just suspected Bergdahl was doing this but never reported it, and which also may have covered up an incident where an Afghan child was rundown by an MRAP - well, now that have a big time problem on their hand.   Their wildcard platoon mate is missing, and THAT they will have to report.

So, would they, could they, throw all his shit in a box and mail it home, adding to Bergdahl's already tainted reputation, as a means to cover their own asses?

Could be - like you said, it's not much different than the Tillman case.

I think everyone also should prepare to find out that Bergdahl was left behind on patrol. It was always his story while he was a POW. The Taliban radio intercepts also said that those who initially captured him thought he was drunk. Leatherman could have been fostering drinking on patrol.

        *****

        That's the scary part.

That his unit massively fucked up and got him captured, and then manufactured a bullshit story about why to cover their asses.

I sincerely hope that's not the case. But, man, that would be some horrendous shit if true.

I am sorry I don't have the links any more but they are in either today or yesterday's bunch.

This is a description of Bergdahl's "post" from an essay showing a Marine's perspective on this story:   On that night, instead of patrolling, they slept in the earthen bunkers of OP Mest, an outpost scraped from a hillside in Afghanistan’s rugged and remote Paktika Province. Life at OP Mest had been miserable: weeklong rotations in the scorching heat, no showers, no food except for Meals Ready-To-Eat.

We know that early Taliban radio intercepts claim that Bergdahl was captured (and there's no way to put this nicely) while taking a shit.   Despite everything else, could this whole thing be that embarrassingly simple?  You get up in the middle of the night to relieve yourself a safe distance away from your sleeping buddies, you grab a drink of water (I do that all the time) and a knife, just in case (I don't do that, but I'm not at a remote Afghan outpost), and you get snatched by the enemy while you're still half-asleep (they thought he was drunk according to other Taliban transmission) and in a very embarrassing and vulnerable position?

          •  Don't you get tired of a bunch of secessionists (0+ / 0-)

calling someone in uniform a deserter. Your scenario is just as possible. I get real tired of the GOP swiftboating (fragging) the troops.

It's been obvious for a long time, since Reagan, really, that Republicans care about our military and our national defense only so far as it helps them politically or financially.

There are many examples:  Bergdahl, John Kerry, Max Cleland, John Murtha, Cindy Sheehan, Pat Tillman, Jessica Lynch  -  and those are just since 2001.

              •  That and the moolisha taking the 2nd Amendment (0+ / 0-)

remedy whatever that is to attack public officials.
