  •  Actually I think it does. (3+ / 0-)

Trying to reason with them doesn't. Trying to use science doesn't. What has happened IMO is that the NRA has worked very hard to make them feel mainstream and validated. Mocking them, ridiculing them and otherwise shaming them is much more likely to make others see them for the idiots they are. There is absolutely no need to pretend that their antics and displays of ignorance are valid. Societies do set mores and standards. To pretend that this kind of behavior is acceptable under the guise of being compassionate doesn't help.

    •  I've seen no effort to "reason with" or "use (0+ / 0-)

      science".

All there is is constant attacks on "penis size".

Don't you get it?  It isn't only about "mak[ing] others see them for the idiots they are".  It is about reaching them, instead of driving them deeper into that "you" want them to abandon altogether.

It is only impossible to reach them if one both refuses the effort, and pushes them deeper into their error.

I think it couldn't be more obvious that I did not say that what they are doing -- and the word "antics" is treating lightly that which is not "light" -- is acceptable, or should be treated as such.  In fact, I've been saying exactly the opposite for going on twenty-five years.  The difference is that I don't see how treating others as "low-lifes" doesn't reinforce them in that status -- in at least one's own view.

Ridicule does not make the object of ridicule amenable to listening to the source of the ridicule.

The realm in which these issues must ultimately be addressed is law.  And it is that to which I consistently point -- in this instance the potential liability of the private property owner (in this instance Target) who might say yes to allowing this sort of lunacy to be acted out on their property.

What would Target's liability be had a child found that loaded handgun and shot itself or someone else?  That is ultimately one of the considerations that will put a stop to these assholes.

        •  It's still a cheap, low-minded shot -- again, (0+ / 0-)

the last person about to be reached by ridicule is the target of the ridicule.

What's lacking is the humanity, the compassion, the lack of which the ridicule is ultimately decrying in its target.
