In general, I'd agree with you about oversimplifying, stereotyping, etc.

In this case, looking at photos of these yokels exercising their right to strut around looking ridiculously inept in their handling of dangerous weapons and a bit too cocky for the comfort of rational people, I'd have to say that commonmass's observation seems very apt.

    •  None of the jackasses engaging in the Internet (0+ / 0-)

"psychodiagnoses" of people they've never met have a clue as to what they are doing, let alone the (lack of) ethics of it.

It's stunning how regularly sheer bigotry is palmed off -- and accepted -- as "reason" -- simply because dressed up in unsubstantiated clap-trap, and aimed at an object or group against which there is a shared and agreed contempt.

Nor do such jackasses give the least thought to the impact -- the consequences -- the "waves they make" -- of their expressions of that which is nothing more than that:

      bigotry.

Want these people to stop being -- and more important, doing -- what "you" believe they are, and don't want them doing?  Then stop pushing them further into what "you" claim you don't want them being and doing.

"Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar." -- Freud.

What, ultimately, is the difference in substance and degree of one mindlessness -- that of gun-nuts -- and another -- that of the glib who believe they can "psychodiagnose" others because they can find a definition or two on the Internet?

Look at the pilings-on defensiveness in reaction -- not response -- to my calling out the pseudo-sophisticated name-calling, behind which is raw malice.

There is much more to legitimate psychodiagnosis than that I am pin-pointing and to which objecting: it is nothing more than pseudo-sophisticated name-calling.

I don't know which "commonmass" comment is intended to be serious, so don't know to which you refer.  The fact is that the constant attacks on maleness -- the symbol for which is the penis -- is constant, is undeniable, is mindless, and is nasty.  It is destructive.

Denying it is obvious and constant -- are the deniers actually that blind to their own behaviors? -- and attempting to rationalize it does nothing legitimate to excuse it.

      •  I didn't "push" them into jackshit (2+ / 0-)

They got there all on their own.  I understand the Open Carry statutes have been on the books for a long time, so what are these morons trying to prove exactly?

The public square belongs to the fucking public, not just some small paranoid portion of it.  We have laws against nuisances like skateboarders terrorizing sidewalk pedestrians, we bust people who are drunk and disorderly or blast music from their car stereo or deafen everyone because they've removed their muffler.  Call me naive, but engaging in what can only be described as intimidating behavior in public is quite a huge notch above those other things.

The people we're belittling have brought the scrutiny and condemnation and scorn on themselves.  If they can't take the heat, they should stay out of the damned kitchen.  It may not be my right to stop them, but it is completely my right to make fun of them and question the personal inadequacies that are obviously driving such ridiculous, unnecessary, in-your-face antics.  It's the equivalent of two gay people deliberately going to a fundamentalist church just to make out in the pew.   I'm a gun owner, I've been around gun owners all my life, and none of us have ever felt the need to "prove" ourselves or our right to bear arms in such a stupid and deliberately provocative way.

So no, I won't be silenced.  My raw malice against these dangerously stupid people is a sign of sanity and, who knows, maybe having the size of their dicks questioned by the broader public would be just the thing to get them to re-think what they're doing.  Scorn is the only defense that responsible gun owners like me have against these cretins, who are proving our point about the need for saner gun laws better than we ever could.

        •  The attacks do not persuade -- they cause their (0+ / 0-)

targets to turn a deaf ear.

It perpetuates the very circumstance it claims to decry.
