  •  I am always amazed by how kludgy evolution (9+ / 0-)

often seems to be (consider that testicles are dangling out where they can be easily damaged).

An intelligent designer would have come up with a cleaner system.

    •  It's for cooling that testicles are out in there (6+ / 0-)

At least that's the best reason they could come up with when I took genetics in college.  Apparently sperm production doesn't work well at full body temperature.  Why evolution (or an intelligent designer) couldn't come up with a less worrisome solution, like sperm production that works fine at body temperature, is an interesting question.

But since college I've come up with a new idea why testicles hang out there.  In artificial insemination, you can pick the gender of the offspring with something like 80% accuracy by whether you take a sample from the top or bottom of the tube of stored semen.  The X chromosomes are heavier than the Y chromosomes, so the XX sperm sink to the bottom of the tube.  Could there be a way to do the same thing in natural insemination?  There might be if natural insemination didn't involve a good shake of the testicles before the semen sample is dispensed.  So maybe testicles hang out there as a way to keep the gender numbers about equal.

We're all pretty strange one way or another; some of us just hide it better. "Normal" is a dryer setting.
