      The only African American governors thus far have been Pinchback, Wilder, Patrick and Paterson. Of these, only Wilder and Patrick were directly elected governor.

      ...automatically will get talked about as possible national ticket-mates.

      Booker moreso, he's got a higher profile and as a Senator from a blue state is less likely to lose the popularity he already has.  A Governorship is more high-risk/high-reward since you can become very popular or very unpopular.  Brown will have to be viewed as a good Governor at home and in the Beltway media to generate the buzz Booker has already been getting.

      It will be an unwritten rule in the Democratic Party going forward that the national ticket must have a woman or nonwhite male on it, either first or second.  That's just where we're headed for the rest of the century.
