When the first probe passed Neptune, it was the last new planetary encounter before the Internet became seriously public.

Being support staff at Ohio State, my wife and I went to the engineering lecture hall for the realtime display of the first B&W versions of photos from what is now known as our outermost planet.

Members of the engineering and astronomy faculty were present and helping explain the views, answer questions and such.

Knowing that this was the last stop for the probe before heliopause, I asked if they would pass along a request to NASA to turn the probe around and take a photo back at ourselves. There was considerable interest in that suggestion, and as we all know, we now have the Pale Blue Dot.

Absolutely every word of that is true, other than the title. Turns out the whole team had been wanting to do this pretty much since the probe was first launched, but because of risk of sun damage to the cameras while there was still vital mission lying ahead.

FYI everybody, when I mod you up it means your outrageous fib about yourself has been duly noted, and -- I am not making this up -- your genuine plastic laminated club membership card will be mailed to you shortly.
