  •  I've been occasionally sharing my story with (14+ / 0-)

people who I see smoking: smoked for about 20 years, tried to quit many, many times, finally quit, have been smoke free for 23 years and they can do the same if they want.  Recently a woman suggested that I could not be that old and I had to confess that I started at age 12.  Was living in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, home of the RJR Reynolds Tobacco Company and it was pretty easy to get cigs.

    •  My Dad started at 12, too (8+ / 0-)

Not in NC, but he took a summer job helping his own Dad around the docks (Grandfather was a boat pilot and rigger at the time) and at the time---late 1940s---the dock guys figured if you were big enough to work, you were big enough to smoke. He ended up smoking for more than half a century before he quit, but he's been quit for 10+ years now. If he hadn't, he wouldn't still be around.

Sharing your story helps; especially when you're newly quit or contemplating quitting, it's hard to believe it's even possible to not smoke, so it helps to see real-life evidence that quitting is doable. :-)
