  •  Just shocking... (10+ / 0-)

With that said, the President is sleeping well at night because of this decision. It was not only the morally correct decision, it was the most politically smart move and this diary explains that well. I'd rather be accused of  saving a life than not acting.

Politics is like driving. To go backward put it in R. To go forward put it in D.

I think the president was surprised at the level of vitriol he's received over this decision but to some extent he probably knew he was in a no-win situation.

    •  But he held a Rose Garden ceremony! (2+ / 0-)

How could he do such a thing?  So tone deaf!  Why that's worse than had he not brought him home! Or worse than had he brought him home?  Wait.  He did bring him home.  But that ceremony was really terrible.  And the Dad with the beard?  How could he not appreciate that people who worship Phil Robertson would think Dad was a secret Muslim.  There should have been no ceremony.  In fact, he should have brought him home without any announcement, and not revealed it until 2017.

I do think the ceremony was a mistake, but not of the epic proportions that the likes of Brooks et al. make it up to be.

was just one of many PR mistakes. Even if you thought the swap made sense, and that confidentiality was required, how the administration handled the rollout and outreach to the press and Congress was not well done. The CBS poll today is proof.

that the right wing noise machine, aided and abetted by CNN and the others can take anything and turn it to shit.  There's no guarantee that a low key announcement would not have had the same result.

President Obama is not entitled to any mistakes apparently.  He has to be as pure as Caesar's wife, to the point of trying to anticipate every deranged reaction that what he does might elicit.  Considering the venom that meets everything he does, he hasn't done a bad job, the Bergdahl press conference notwithstanding.

There's no reason for Democrats to echo the braying by, e.g., Nicole Wallace on Maher or others about the problematic press conference.  That mistake pales in comparison to the lunacy of the many who screamed for Bergdahl's release only to do a 180 and scream against his release.

It should not be difficult to choose between their sociopathy and the President's PR mistake.  Let the nuts pile on, not us.

            •  Bethesda - I think it's completely understandable (0+ / 0-)

to want to see Sgt. Bergdahl released, but not support this specific swap. Most people here think for some reason you can't have both views, happiness that Bergdahl is in safe hands, but highly critical of the specifics of the swap and how the administration managed the information and outreach to the public, press and Congress.

This was a really botched effort and not up to the standards of this administration. That's why the polls are so bad.
