  •  I'm not calling for the teacher's dismissal. (5+ / 0-)

But this is a really stupid thing to say, even as a joke. It's like addressing the kid as "boy" with the particular Dixie inflection.

I think that would be a much better response, what you gave above. That would definitely be an equivalent level of snark and sarcasm.

Am I the only one that doesn't use ethnically or racially loaded sarcasm with my students? Actually, for that matter am I the only one that doesn't respond to my students with sarcasm in the first place? WTF?

      And never respond with sarcasm?

I'm surprised your students are blinded by the light of your halo or bored to tears with your sincerity. ;)

Using ethnic or racial sarcasm intentionally would never be acceptable in my classroom.

Accidentally saying something cringeworthy like "Yeah, boy!" to a black student (without the Dixie inflection) and then realizing afterwards how that might have sounded and making the effort to discuss it with the kid later, who happens to be one of my favorite students, and who laughed it off, and who has thanked me for being one of the few teachers that openly discusses racial politics?

      I plead guilty!
