  •  Nobody's bashing China. (8+ / 0-)

Can't really blame them for taking advantage of our greed at the top. They have a large country, much of which remains in major need of modernization.  The Chinese take care of themselves and expect us to do the same.  Our stupidity is not their fault.  Taking advantage of our stupidity is to be expected.

      •  PBS's Super Skyscrapers series featured the (6+ / 0-)

construction of a very tall building in Shanghai.  The thing that caught my attention was the extent to which contractors would take shortcuts.  The pressure was on management to catch the shortcuts and demand, if appropriate, that things be made right.  I'm sure that goes on all around the world on all manner of projects, but I'm more familiar with the philosophy of it's cheaper to do it once than to do it twice.

either unregulated or corrupted ... is a corrupt money system ... is a corrupt money system ... is a corrupt money system ... anywhere in the world ... not unique to China!

is called "construction litigation" here in the US Empire, and a whole lot of other institutional and corporate behaviors, and of course FOXland and the comments on Yahooo! articles, before offering the Yellow Peril broadstroke comparison of how life is valued by the BILLION INDIVIDUALS that make up "China", that obscurant personification as compared to our Exceptional Empire, where "a certain amount of killing has always been an element of bidness." Killing and maiming are easy as Pi, wherever you go in the humanspace, and there's no indication of special reluctance for such behaviors in our own Empire...

          •  Construction litigation? That helps NOT! (0+ / 0-)

Tell me how litigating in any way, shape or form helps a structure be safer, last longer or cost less than doing it right the first time with American steel by people whose children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren will be using the bridge in the next 100 years.
Spending money on a lawyer fight gets no taxpayer/ bridge traveller safety. No litigation of any worth improves the speed or product or cost.
Shortsightedness is an American politicial watchword. Bridge builders want the bridges to wear out in 20 years or less. Taxpayers want them to safely last 100.  Even if the 100 year bridge is more than 5x more expensive, it is cheaper in the long run because of inflation.

      •  Not so sure about China and value of human life (0+ / 0-)

But it may be so ... disturbing reports about human organs being taken from prisoners while still alive (without their consent) ...  those are reportedly death penalty cases ... although there is no information available on death penalty cases or on death penalty statistics ... makes the Saudi Kingdom look pretty good on human rights ... but I think that's less about the Chinese people and more about the Chinese elitist system. It's Animal Farm.

in 10 years that country will fall apart.
