  •  I am from a town that has had a school shooting. (6+ / 0-)

It was just after Columbine and the shooter didn't kill anyone but it was quite startling to be going about my daily business and to suddenly find my hometown in the news.

I had long hoped that very few people would belong to my peculiar little club. Now unfortunately it appears we all will belong sooner or later.

What will it take for people to realize that an amendment that made sense in the 18th century doesn't in the 21st?

    •  It actually didn't make sense then, either (2+ / 0-)

It has never made sense. It was mostly the continental army, the French navy, good generalship, British military vanity and logistical realities that won the war, not local militias, Ethan Allen and Daniel Morgan notwithstanding.

      •  It wasn't based on who helped win the war (0+ / 0-)

It was to provide some means of defense absent a standing army.

It was so that southern slaveowners could keep down slave revolts. The US has always had a standing army and militias have never played a strong role in its defense. Americans' gun "rights" are implicit in the constitution and have never needed their own amendment for any legitimate reason.

it has turned into a way to arm white supremacists and terrorize leftists. The question is how do we change it?

We can't repeal the 2nd at this point, so we have to chip away at it, the way they've chipped away at abortion rights. Require national licensing and training with regular renewals. Pass and enforce safety laws aggressively with severe repercussions for violations. Put a high tax on ammo. Require expensive cases for transporting guns. And so on. Make it not impossible, but much harder, to own and use guns, especially for reasons they're not intended for, like protecting one's hot sauce at Chipotle..
