    sort of an example of the exception. He grew up dirt poor in the depression but saw his mother make it with the minimal social welfare that was available. He didn't have the social skills to make up for the hard attitudes he shared freely to do well at his job (PhD in R&D).

    He is now approaching 90 and is still very independent (to the point of unsafe driving). However he has spent a lifetime putting many hours of helping others in the NAACP, Peace Corps, Habitat for Humanity and counseling prisoners. Rand did have some examples of people helping others - usually people who had capability, but needed the hand up. She did see the advantage of the majority being able to reach their potential, just not how much the rules were stacked against so many.
