  •  So.. Just a thought.. (3+ / 0-)

In the past, when progressives / liberals "purists", bemoaned the lack of economic liberal Democrats...

A common refrain was: "We have to be moderate, we can't be seen as being extreme or we'll lose elections..."

Yet - and isn't this odd? - a Right Wing nutjob did just that and cost Cantor his party's nomination.

So.. does that change the calculus any?  Does that put to rest, once and for all, the bullshit meme that we have to be "moderate" (read: Fiscally Right Wing), in order for a Democrat to win an election?

Can we dispense with that Dem-Corporate Excuse Meme now?

The 1% are Purists: They only support Candidates that Deliver Results They Can Bank On. Don't they know they should compromise? /sarcasm

    •  Depends on the locale (7+ / 0-)

You demand purity you will never get more than 200 Dems in the House of Representatives. A central part of Howard Dean's 50 State Strategy was that we have to run conservative candidates in conservative areas to win general elections.

Another more general aspect of elections is that you have to run candidates who cater to the particular interest of that region. NY Senators (Chuck Schumer) will always cater to Wall Street. LA Senators (Mary Landrieu) will always look out for the oil and gas industry. WV Senators (Jay Rockefeller) will always go to bat for coal. VT Senators (Bernie Sanders) won't be Senators for long if they don't help dairy farmers or get too enthusiastic about gun control. I could go on and on. We have the luxury of being ideologically pure here on the internet. Politicians who want to win elections can't.

    •  Moderation is corporatist bullshit. (0+ / 0-)

I know I don't get off my but to work for / vote for:

      -- weak tea --

I want a person with passion and principles.

The Masters of the Universe absolutely do NOT.

That's why they use their money in the primaries to knock out anyone with real principles.

We get to choose toady 'A' or toady 'B' in the general.

      Democracy - yeah...

The Fail will continue until actual torches and pitchforks are set in motion. -

    •  The meme pushed by the GOP/Media... (0+ / 0-) that this shows that candidates of all parties must tack to the right.  Period.

So you have to counter a few decades of this brainwashing of your closest rellies by the only media they see (which sure as hell ain't Daily Kos, much less Counterpunch).
