    All through school, my son was close friends with a boy who "looked Hispanic" and had parents with typical "Hispanic" names.  My grade school aged son always assumed that they were "Mexican."   When we got to know the parents, I asked if the mom could please act as a translator in a situation nearby, but she told me that she didn't know Spanish.  She did have an accent, so that surprised me.  But in talking further, they mentioned why they had moved to the Midwest from Colorado: for a better life for their kids.  The woman said that their people had been in Colorado for over 400 years. I never did find out how they self-identify, but they've never been out of the US.  So somehow, I think that makes her more American than any white people I know.  Why, oh why, do we identify people so much by how they look.  BTW, our family includes some Asians as well as whites,  so my kids tell me that other kids would assume that we weren't really all in the same family.
