    the other version is the Papacy and the Papal States, with an oligarchical college of electors--just as tyrannical, even more justified by divine right, and even more corrupt, because (as I'm reminded by a book I just today) each family has only a generation to get a share of the spoils.

    Other examples: the Holy Roman Empire until about 1200, the "Serene Republic" of Venice.
