but usually they know about Syria. That's why I use ISIS.

    And then there's 'Sham'. :)

The world is bad enough as it is, you have no right to make it any worse.
Lamb chop, we can quibble what to call it, but I think we can both agree it's creepy.

I see that Al-Sham is Arabic for Levant.

al Sham can also mean the city of Damascus.

If you are 7th century wanna be like ISIL/ISIS/Da'ish, you would think of al Sham as the 'area controlled by the city of Damascus'. Geographically, this would be the Levant. Or if you look at it from 21st Century, you would think of the country that is run from Damascus, or Syria.

        Thus the confusion.

I prefer to think of it this way:

ISIL - moderate, pro-democracy, western rebels who want to free themselves from the evil government of al Asad so they can be free. Until publicity was too bad. Then they become al Asad-backed terrorists existing only to give al Asad an excuse to bomb children.

until they cross over into Iraq. Then they are...

ISIS - evil terrorists who kills anything that doesn't match their religious believes.
