    my father better, and hating too many of the things I did know.  He had a brutal upbringing, and was a brilliant stubborn man with both a sense of humor and a terrible temper.  He died when two days after my 16th birthday, and I regret my strongest emotion at the time was relief, that the fear was gone.  Remembrance and mourning did not come until much later.

      i mean, no age is good, but 16 is such a formative year

      are you saying he brought the brutality of his youth into your family, causing you to fear him?  i'm sorry you had to deal with that
