      nothing but everything Twain I could lay my hands to during the last two years of high school.

      Also where I grew up the first major life-goal was to quit school at 16.  

      Intervening between the two is education (humanities, law), much writing, poetry . . .

      So for more than 50 years I've been arguing against the "right" to be illiterate.
