    ..on the DOT 111A (pdf) vs the somewhat safer DOT 105. 112, 114 rail cars.

    Evidently the DOT 111 @ 7/16th of an inch thickness were originally designed for lighter duty non volatile liquids then because there was no restrictions they began being used for volatile liquids as they were cheaper

    The DOT 105's @ 9/16th of an inch thickness  were made for the hazardous liquids and were stronger but more expensive.

    There was a major upgrade in 1978 required by the NTSB. Shields were installed on the rail cars to help protect from puncturing. But these safety changes were done for pressurized cars, but not for non-pressurized cars. The DOT 111A's are non-pressurized

    So now not only are hazardous liquids being transported without all the latest safety upgrades, the DOT 111 which were designed for corn syrup etc. are being used for hazardous/volatile crude oil.  It's a mess
