...that if you do a terrible thing, the best you can do is to make sure it doesn't get more terrible...and in this case it seems to me like amidst all the bad (Iraqi) actors there's one who is notable worse than the others.  I think the US, for the reasons you've laid out (which I don't especially agree with, but that's another issue), could be seen as having more of a burden of care, however relative, than other countries or even the Iraqis themselves.

This burden of empire b.s. always ends badly.

We were clueless about the cultere when we went in. We are still clueless.  Clueless doesn't do much for widows and orphans except make more of them.

That wasn't exactly a history text.  It was a beautiful movie but more of a poem than a record of what happened.   Instead of downloading the movie, I'd  suggest  going to the library and reading a few books about the war and Lawrence's part in it.

The problem is that I don't believe that the US is capable of fixing it. The occupation of Iraq took a bad situation and made it worse. It isn't that if the US re-enters the fray that the killing, displacement and destruction will stop. In fact, based on past events, just the opposite may occur.

Unless we wish to permanently occupy Iraq and conduct a continuous counter-insurgency, we will eventually leave. When that happens, the same actors will be there.

Unfortunately, though the US created the present situation, it will be up to the Iraqis themselves to eventually undo the damage.

Exactly why we should stay the hell out.  We'd only make it worse.
