Somehow, "nutritious," "appetizing" and "within budget" don't ever seem to intersect for school meals programs.  We need to work on that.

And God yes, get the kiddos to exercise!

is that school food has relatively high overhead. The equipment and power to refrigerate, store, prepare and serve the food is often as much as the food itself.

Some factors in this: the equipment is a single retail install, food prep is labor, but the food is bought on contract wholesale in bulk.

When a budget gets whacked, the first thing to go is the food, which leaves equipment idle. Then the cutters scream about waste and demand the equipment be sold (at pennies on the dollar). Once the equipment is sold, the cost to re-start the program becomes prohibitive.

This same pattern plays out with many municipal programs. Snow plowing. Parks. etc.

It is a deliberate strategy on the part of the cutters.

The schools should feed anyone entitled to government food programmes.

Indeed they should house people 8PM-6AM who the government qualifies for public housing.

And I'd go so far as to pay minimum wage for any hours enrolled in a curriculum (class/homework).

That would get the most out of the infrastructure investments. And give at least the minimum to our human investments, which helps get the most out of them (and them get the minimum out of life).
