  •  The anti vaxers should see a child in an iron lung (10+ / 0-)

As I did when I when I was a patient in the polio ward. It is an unnerving sight and not an outcome I would wish on anyone. They should be forced to explain to this child why they don't care how many kids die, are paralyzed or sickened. They should tell them how there will soon be a vaccine that can eliminate polio forever but they are opposed to it and don't want any children to have it.

I lived the fifties. Apparently the anti vaxers don't even know there was such a time.

      Vaccine.

I also lived in the 50's and had friends who contracted Polio.  I got my Polio Vaccine, Small Pox Vaccine and TB Tine test.  I had Chicken Pox and Red Measles.  Although I am sure that some kids had complications to measles and chicken pox, I was not aware of any.

If the debate is over Polio and small pox or any disease similarly virulent, I agree that they should vaccinate.  But for measles, chicken pox, mumps etc. I am not sure why people are so concerned about a small part of the population opting out.

      •  As this link from the Mayo clinic (9+ / 0-)

indicates even mumps can have a far reaching impact, sure they may be less frequent but why run the risk against something preventable.....

Now I will be honest and admit I have zero patience with entertaining arguments against vaccinations.

of people opting out before herd immunity is compromised. Because that childhood disease of measles is far more dangerous than you think. Because one out of 20 children who get measles get pneumonia. Because out of every 1,000 children who get measles, one or two will die. Because measles in an unvaccinated woman may cause a miscarriage. Because 164,000 people die from measles in the world ever year.
Prior to the chicken pox vaccine, 100-150 people died of chicken pox in the US each year.
That's why it's important for everyone to be vaccinated against these diseases.

If I am not for myself, then who will be for me? When I am only for myself, then what am "I"? And if not now, when?

in an unvaccinated population, essentially everybody eventually gets infected with it. A 1-in-1000 case-fatality rate is enormous when you're talking about a disease that everybody gets.

      •  Just yesterday, as a matter of fact (0+ / 0-)

Some guy was horribly concerned about the poor children infected when the attenuated virus oral polio vaccine reverts.

As it happens he was so persistently obnoxious that his brand new account was bojoed after two diaries in two days.

      •  in the Trees: YOU should get a shingles shot (0+ / 0-)

I had chicken pox as a kid and at 53 the shingles kicked in. They suck. it's the same virus. It stays dormant for decades.
