Thank you for continuing to bear witness.

I was born in '58 and hence was only a child during Freedom Summer. But as an adult, I met someone from SE MI who took part, when she herself was 18. She's become a good friend, but more importantly, I think she has taken the inspiration that motivated her to join way back then to remain an activist for social justice all her life.

Some years ago, I came across a small magazine-style publication called Free At Last: A History of the Civil Rights Movement and Those Who Died in the Struggle. (I recommend it.) Though it was designed for a wide range of ages, I would use sections of it for my college classes, because even then, even those well-educated students (most of them) had no real idea of the scope of domestic terrorism that was exercised against African-Americans, well into the 20th century, that necessitated such a risky and courageous pushback on the part of those who sought justice and freedom.

Two things I recall from that book even now. One is that several of the young people who had been murdered had no photographs. Presumably, that was because they had never been in one--the depth of poverty they experienced being so great.

The other, more heartbreaking, was that there were many young people who died at the hands of local terrorists and were later found, never to be identified--as you say had happened during the search for Chaney, Goodman, and Schwerner. That is real, indescribable tragedy: to be murdered and for your people never to know what befell you. And for your murderers never to be brought to justice on this earth.

We must remember and honor the sacrifice of those who gave everything. Thanks again MB for your work, then and now.
