  •  It's Both Of Them (7+ / 0-)

With Varys being reluctant to take part.

And the fight happens in the book, but it's not between Brienne and the Hound. It's between the Hound and some of his former men.

Plus the characterization is a little different. Book Arya refuses to kill the Hound because she hates him. I didn't read Maisie Williams' thousand yard stare as exactly hate. Her feelings are definitely conflicted, but I thought there was still a little of bit of Arya's humanity left that couldn't bring herself to kill him, no matter how badly the Hound tried to goad her in to doing it.

    •  See, I read Arya's reaction the other way... (7+ / 0-)

with her refusal to kill him (which would've been the humane thing to do) a sign of her loss of humanity.

I don't think she would of hesitated to stick her "Needle" into him and end it. Yeah, letting him sit there and suffer is more punitive, but I just didn't feel that she was leaving him alive because of hate or indifference.

It can be read either way, but it felt similar to the ending of Breaking Bad. I don't think Jesse refuses to kill Walt because of a loss of humanity that wants Walt to suffer. And in the final scenes, there's a nod between the two characters where they acknowledge there's still some bits of a relationship between them. I think Jesse refuses because he's tired of being part of someone else's "game."

And I that's somewhat similar to what happens between Arya and the Hound.

    •  What did you think of the season overall? (6+ / 0-)

I know a lot of people thought it was a letdown from previous seasons, but I didn't think so at all.

The season finale was arguably the best one of the series, and there were a bunch of other very strong episodes.

      •  Liked It A Lot (5+ / 0-)

It was much better than last season.

I was surprised so many people didn't like the penultimate episode ("The Watchers On The Wall").

To me that was one of the best episodes the show has ever done. But I read a lot of comments where people just weren't into the episode because they don't give a shit about the Jon Snow storyline, and thought all of it was a distraction from what was going on in King's Landing.
