  •  The term doesn't apply to all Black people... (10+ / 0-)

...just to those who sing and dance for the Right, who co-sign the racism coming from the right, and who absolutely refuse to acknowledge the racism of the right, but are quick to point out the racism from the Democratic Party.

They represent nothing but the worst, and they fulfill the stereotypes that they accuse everyone else of harboring.  And I can't think of a more contemptible name for people who say things like "Thank God for slavery."  They're reprehensible.

that you are trying to make, but the language you have chosen to use is not going to fly on this site.

You may be accustomed to writing for a largely black audience. Here you are not. This might be a good time to think about "code switching"?

      •  Excuse me... (5+ / 0-)

I take offense to your "You may be accustomed to writing for a largely black audience" and "code switching" comments.  I took his "pet negro" tag as satire/sarcasm, no where near the condescending and "holier than thou" stance that you've chosen to take.

      •  wanna flesh this out? I'm not taking it well, as (0+ / 0-)

        written.

cause it's sounding to me like "unghettoize yourself."

        explain how I'm wrong.

        •  Sure (0+ / 0-)

Sorry for the delayed response - it was on yesterday's comment list so I hadn't noticed your recent response.

I hope I wasn't meaning "unghettoize yourself". Diarist is relatively new here, and was taking a fair bit of heat in the comments. In fact, enough that it appears he ended up making some editing decisions himself.

My central point, which I would direct to any diarist of any background, is that the point of communication is to get your message through to the audience you are addressing. If something you are doing is creating "noise" that inhibits that process it might be well to "consider your audience", and adjusting accordingly. And that doesn't mean "pandering" or "coddling" - the term "code switching" actually serves quite well. All effective communicators do it. For example, I know if I am explaining a new initiative to help homeless families my presentation is going to be very different if I'm talking to social service workers, a neighborhood association, or a wealthy group of potential donors.

Or, as much as this old white guy can try to get it...

But the imagery makes my skin crawl. Now maybe that's the effect you're looking for, I don't know.

Kudos to you for coming back in and explaining.

....I just don't care for the use of the term "pet Negro"...

You could use less inflammatory language and make all the same points.

I don't think there'd be as much sniveling if you'd referred to the guy as an "Uncle Tom" .....

(the title you chose would show up on search engine searches and would cast discredit upon the site, at the very least)

"Ronald Reagan is DEAD! His policies live on but we're doing something about THAT!"
