  •  You might be right but she is certainly helping (13+ / 0-)

    her raise money:

Warren also is helping Democrat Michelle Nunn raise money for a U.S. Senate bid in Georgia. She faces the winner of a GOP July runoff between David Perdue and Jack Kingston.
I do hope Warren makes it down to the Peach State.

It'd be disastrous for Nunn's appeal. She has to win deep-south whites that haven't voted Dem since her father. She's not going to do that without isolating herself and making it about Georgia and Georgia alone.

Nunn can use the money - no one actually cares about out-of-state money. But she needs to do all her campaigning herself. And she can't be associated with an economic populist like Warren. It just won't fly in GA.

and I'm dubious on the last one that showed her up +13 over Broun.

I am trying not to get my hopes up too high on this one, but JEEZUS what I wouldn't give to see this seat flip back.

      •  I defer to you as a person who lives in the South (13+ / 0-)

But this still troubles me a little:

She has to win deep-south whites... She's not going to do that without isolating herself and making it about Georgia and Georgia alone.
It's hard to think of a population that has been more thoroughly screwed by the Republican Party than poor uneducated, especially rural, whites in the South... unless it is poor blacks or Latinos, and maybe there's the rub.

Someday... someday... someday... we need someone to stand up in the South with a true, national, populist Democratic message and not make it about every little local issue.  The GOP uses you, screws you, works against you, divides us all according to race and religion, and makes damn sure your children are stuck in poverty.  Wake the f' up!

I am a northerner and no political analyst, but sometimes I wonder if the best tactic isn't to simply tell the truth, loudly.  I have a bit of a political crush on Elizabeth Warren because she does that.  She may not be the best fit in the South, but I wish we had a Southerner made of the same substance as her because sooner or later, it might just catch.

put the two together on a ticket and they could win.

Obama told the truth, loudly. Kerry told the truth, loudly. We lose when it's base vs base in southern states because we've already seen what a base election is with Obama vs Romney and Obama vs McCain and Kerry vs Bush. The states we didn't win in those elections are states where our base is insufficiently large to counter their base.

Base vs base is a great strategy in places like Wisconsin where our base is slightly bigger than theirs. It's not so hot when your presidential candidate loses the state by over 20% (like in LA, KY, etc). You need those crossover voters - and they exist in varying quantities depending on the state. I mean, there's no other way to explain how Joe Manchin could win with over 60% of the vote at the same time Obama is losing WV with less than 40%.

          •  Messenger often trumps message (8+ / 0-)

Obama and Kerry were unacceptable messengers for the (for lack of a better word) "tribal" voters in the Deep South. Warren's story and her Oklahoma/Texas "cultural presentation" will get her a foot in the door that neither Obama nor Kerry could manage.

and that of Egalitare, just above this comment.  I think you are both correct, or at least you both make a compelling case.

We don't have the base advantage.  True.  But messengers matter and personalities matter... Obama couldn't sell because he's black and even if unacknowledged, racism or at least identity politics just runs too deep among low income whites.  Kerry couldn't sell because... well, he's a terrible messenger and a terrible candidate and I still cringe every time I hear him open his mouth.  If Kerry was selling ketchup rather than his wife's family, Heinz would be a failed company.

The right messenger might be able to expand the field a bit.  I actually think that if people really listen to Elizabeth Warren that she might be a better "fit" than Obama, who will never gain that white support in the South, or Kerry, who is simply a poor communicator.
