  •  Well, I hope Port Auth doesn't take the fall, (4+ / 0-)

    while Christie walks free.

"Privatize to Profitize" explains every single Republican economic, social and governing philosophy. Take every taxpayer dollar from defense, education, health care, public lands, retirement - privatize it, and profit from it.

    •  Shouldn't they be at least equally responsible? (11+ / 0-)

Christie publicly (and presumably privately) encouraged them to violate regulations. Ultimately, the Port Authority made the decision to violate the law, over objections of counsel. Unless there was illegal coercion, aren't they at least as responsible as Christie?

      •  Exactly (6+ / 0-)

I don't care what Christie said to them. My kids used to say, "He MADE me do it!" Yeah, right. He held a gun to their heads and made them write the check? They're just as responsible as he is. And if they didn't like it, they should have gone to a higher authority, or to the press.

I understand Christie's star was on the rise at that time, he was getting away with all kinds of shenanigans, and the media were giving him a free pass. But the Port Authority colluded with him in this.

How much real or perceived authority did Christie have over hiring/firing?

That's an honest question, btw.  I don't really know the answer, but if Christie had that authority or if it was perceived that he had that authority (or had the people who did in his pocket), then PA employees could have a defense.
