  •  I know that I'm a broken record (10+ / 0-)

But this is the best example of what my father told me when I was growing up in Kentucky.  My father was typical of rural Kentucky men:  he was a bigot.  However, my father never voted Republican, even though he couldn't stand blacks.  I asked him about this.  And he told me that racism was the greatest motivating factor for most Southern whites, and Republicans capitalized on this by telling Southern whites, "We Republicans will hurt blacks for you, but you whites have to vote for us."  Unfortunately, Republican economic policies are only for wealthy white men, so Southern whites were "shooting their own foot off to try and hurt the black man across the street from them."

So my father could see the class warfare at the heart of Republican policies, but very few of his friends and relatives saw the same thing.  I know because I used to hear them talk about politics, and some of the nauseating stupidity put forth in those discussions has stuck in my brain to this very day.  I heard some of his redneck friends exclaim that certain Democratic policies were nothing but "N***er Bills!"

So everything came down to "How can we hurt the blacks?"  Never mind that Republican economic policies would hurt working class whites, as long as the Republicans promised to punish blacks it was OK.  McDaniel will do everything he can to punish blacks, so he will win this primary.
