stat should not include persons who are related. Mass murder has never included family members. So if we were to change it now, it would be difficult to compare statistics across different time periods. Plus, it's just not the same thing when someone in a family goes berzerk and kills their loved ones. That's not mass murder, not to me.

By your thinking, she is justified because she brought them into this world and she can take them out too?  A father is a little less directly involved in bringing them into this world, but it takes two to tango. A husband and wife that have a fight and one kills the other and then kills themselves, there is nothing there but a tragedy. I think they all need to be counted. Make the bloody statistics as bad as it can get. It won't change until people wake up and decide that this is enough, it must end now.  When the FBI releases new stats on murders in the country, there should be no making nice, let's not hide the bad news,  we must count each and every homicide, suicide, infanticide, pesticide, herbicide, Anything that will account for the grim news that we as a society are crazy to allow this to continue. The example at the Bundy ranch is just the tip of the iceberg. I'd bet that there will be a bloodbath in the next five years that will likely be in Arizona or Nevada that will result in federal agents being killed by crazy gun nuts. Mark my words, it will happen. The Bundy ranch was just the start. These crazy people have pushed back the Feds and they are feeling that they won. The next time, it may be another standoff but they will come back again and again, and eventually, some crazy will pull the trigger and it will be a major disaster. I would like to never see this happen, I don't think I could have believed it could happen maybe a few years ago, but this is building. These crazies are getting bolder and bolder and the stupid faux noise people are cheering them on. It will happen. I just hope when it does that some sane people will take control and make a change, right now, politicians are afraid to talk about gun control. They think it is an instant loser. But I would hope that some sane person will stand up to these crazies and make a stand. We need to stop it, NOW.

being, and strangers another.  Maybe it is better to be slaughtered by kinfolk, I do not know, but killing any more than one human at a time seems to be mass murder.  Would you consider it "mass" if the relative lined up hi victims in one room for the killing?

You may be correct.  But guns are enabling in each case.

    •  I agree with doc2 here. (0+ / 0-)

A family annihilator is operating on a different set of motivations that a domestic murderer who kills his wife but does not kill himself.  A mass murderer has another, distinct set of motives.  A serial killer's motivations are different from a mass murderer's. A man who kills his wife for her money has a different pattern of behavior than a man who kills his wife out of delusional jealousy.

The motivations are important, because it allows researchers to look for and recognize distinct patterns.
