    It varies a lot by region. In Mississippi, the "real" election is often the Republican primary. Mostly likely the case in this Senate primary.

    That's certainly how it goes in rural Northern New Mexico where I live. You win the Democratic primary for DA or Sheriff or whatever, or for Congress in NM-03, and you're basically elected. Election Day in November is just a rubber stamp formality. Since NM has closed primaries, a lot of people who aren't "really" Dems sign still register as same so they can participate in the primary. I always point that out when I'm registering voters: If you want to vote in primaries, you have to pick a party.

    New York City has a similar situation. The primary for mayor, or for Charlie Rangel, is where the action is.
