  •  I expected diary to be about American Southwest... (6+ / 0-)

...and the potential nonviability of cities such as Phoenix and Las Vegas looming within just another decade or two, unless they can summon the political muscle to divert (steal) water from the Pacific Northwest or else pony up for expensive desalinization of ocean water from the Pacific.

    •  And some have suggested.... (1+ / 0-)

diverting Great Lakes water, the fifth greatest repository of fresh water on the planet. That's why Canada and the Great Lakes states created a compact that requires unanimous approval before any water is pumped out of the watershed.

    •  In Colorado it is illegal to catch rain water (1+ / 0-)

running out of your own gutter downspout.

      Now that's harsh.

to do as much water harvesting as possible including runoff water and even grey water now for irrigation....

.....Then again we live on ground water here so any water harvesting we do is simply replenishing our own aquifer......

We have been banking CAP water for years here and will continue, over 100k acre feet a year iirc.....

      •  Whereas here in Milwaukee... (0+ / 0-)

The sewerage district encourages and has subsidized installation of residential rain barrels, residential and commercial "green" roofs, permeable-surface lots and other methods to reduce pollution and storm water run-off. Here at our house we use rain barrel water to give our trees and yard plants a drink. This is becoming a trend in large cities including Chicago and New York.
